IBM : Fostering Innovation & Promoting Progress
If not IBM - Who do we trust to handle the new global intellectual property system?
IBM - Fostering Innovation & Promoting Progress with Watson
Design Team: Nathan Potts, Dennis Ellis & Jonathan Partlow
Global IP (Intellectual property) is a ‘When’ not ‘If’ proposition and the stakes are high, not only for those that are trying to secure IP rights and businesses that depend on those rights but also for Governments and for the service providers that figure out a way to organize and create a system that is capable of collecting, parsing and making useful the past and future intellectual property data from 100’s of years of history from every country in the world.
IBM is (currently) the only company with the technical power (Watson), worldwide reputation and infrastructure to handle such a daunting task.
In our design we looked at the immediate improvements that could be made to a system in the United States that is currently failing the stated mission of the USPTO.
“Foster innovation and competitiveness by providing high quality and timely examination of patent and trademark applications” – USPTO
We also explored the role in which IBM & Watson could play in helping the USPTO fulfill that mandate in an efficient and sustainable way, provide greater access to patent information and innovative ideas for the lay person and presented the possibility of a model for IBM to be the service provider globally in this space.
