Strategic and Systemic Business Model Design
Jonathan's Personal Design Philosophy
The ask was for a paper on my design philosophy... (papers are just boring)
Personal Design Philosophy
Designer: Jonathan Partlow
In this project I really got to explore my own design philosophy and further define, refine and (as a consequence of the constraints of the projects) compare / contrast them to the academic papers and theorist in field.
I also saw this as an opportunity to not only put into the world my beliefs on design, and myself as a designer, but also to put into practice those beliefs in creating a ‘magazine style’ deliverable with relevant images and ‘conversations’ to express my philosophy rather than a paper.
The logic is that Professor Stolterman (the user) would be receiving many papers in black and white type that go on page after page trying to ‘weave’ the required readings into cohesive chunks … This would just not be the best way to spend Christmas Holiday. The magazine format also allowed me to include the required references to readings in their own segment addressing each one on it’s own.
One other obvious advantage was using the magazine format allowed the images to truly anchor and represent my personal philosophy in a more substantive way. The idea was that a user could quickly glean through the publication and have fairly good understanding of my design beliefs and personality.
If you have read this short description and are already bored – Can you imagine 30+ extremely excruciatingly long papers?
‘What is the use of a book’, thought Alice, ‘without pictures or conversations?’ – Lewis Carrol
